Remembering the victims of the 2005 earthquake

The 17th anniversary of the devastating 2005 earthquake was celebrated across Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. The state flag was kept half-mast on all state public buildings to celebrate the anniversary.

The commemoration was marked as “Patience Day”, along with “National Day for Safety Awareness from Natural Disasters” and “Day of Resolve and Resolve for Reconstruction in Memory of Earthquake Martyrs”.

A special prayer was held for the souls of the late victims and to express full solidarity and sympathy with the survivors of the worst natural disaster in history.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck AJK and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 8:52 am on October 8, 2005.

Muzaffarabad, the state capital, was ground zero in the catastrophic earthquake. The city and the entire surrounding area around Balakot was left virtually unknown when the ground stopped shaking, killing more than 82,000 people and injuring thousands.

The devastating earthquake of October 8, 2005 shook AJK and adjacent areas of KP, reducing large parts of the two adjacent areas to rubble.

AJK Chief Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan laid a wreath in memory of martyrs in the state capital. The ceremony was attended by a large number of ministers and the people of the region. A one-minute silence was also observed at 8:52 AM.
