The Florida Department of Health reminds residents of the dangers of Negreria Faureli

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) has identified a case in Florida infected with Naegleria fowleri in Hillsboro County. Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic, single-cell, living amoeba. Amoeba can cause a rare brain infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), which destroys brain tissue and is usually fatal. Amoebas are commonly found in warm fresh water such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals.
Infection can occur when contaminated water enters the body through the nose. When amoeba enters the nose, it moves to the brain and causes PAM. Infections usually occur when the temperature rises for an extended period of time, resulting in elevated water temperatures and lower water levels. The peak season for this amoeba is July, August and September. Naegleria fowleri is found in many warm freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers in the United States, but is more common in southern states. Due to the low number of infections, it is difficult to know why a few people were infected compared to millions of others who used the same or similar waters throughout the United States.
Although only 37 exposures have been reported in Florida since 1962, DOH has been used by people who frequently swim or dive in Florida’s lakes, rivers, and ponds during warm temperatures to neglect Warning about possible existence. Since amoeba comes in through the nasal passages, avoiding contact of the nose with water can prevent adverse health effects on humans. As a precaution, health authorities recommend the following:
- Avoid water-related activities in thermally polluted waters such as warm fresh water, hot springs, and water near power plants
- Avoid water-related activities in warm fresh water during periods of high water temperature and low water level
- When participating in water-related activities in warm freshwater bodies such as lakes, rivers, and hot springs, close your nose or use a nose clip.
- Do not dig or stir sediments while participating in water-related activities in shallow, warm freshwater bodies.
- Keep in mind that you may also contact the amoeba if you use a neti pot to rinse the sinuses of cold/allergy-related congestion and perform religious rituals with tap water. Only use boiling and cooling, distilled, or sterile water to make a netipot sinus wash or to perform a ritual wash.
Contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience these symptoms after swimming in warm water: headache, fever, nausea, disorientation, vomiting, stiff shoulders, seizures, loss of balance, or hallucinations. Immediate medical attention is essential as symptoms progress rapidly after they appear.
