In the aftermath of the killing of Mahsa Amini by Iran’s morality police and the ensuing violent protests, Iran’s women’s basketball team posted a photo on social media without a headscarf.

Iran’s women’s basketball team removed their headscarves and posted a photo on Instagram in protest of gender apartheid. And they published the picture under the slogan: Freedom of Women’s Life.

Protests began in Iran after the death of Kurdish Mohsa Amini in the custody of the “morality police”. Amini was arrested for allegedly wearing an “indecent” veil. After her death, women led protests against the strict veiling rules in Iran, leading to a major challenge to the ruling Islamic regime.

Iranian Archer Parida Ghasemi removed her veil to protest the award ceremony in the Iranian capital, Tehran. In a video that went viral, people can be heard clapping and cheering at Ghasemi’s actions. However, in an Instagram post, the archer said the veil had fallen because of the wind and was not a sign of protest. She said she had “no problem with the hijab”.

Last month, Iranian climber Elnaz Rekabi competed without a headscarf and won plaudits. She, too, later said that she had done so unintentionally and apologized.
