WHO lists pathogens that could cause future pandemics: report
The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a global scientific process to update the list of priority pathogens that can cause outbreaks and pandemics, according to news agency ANI.
In an official statement, WHO also said these pathogens could guide global investment, research and development (R&D), especially in vaccines, tests and treatments.
Starting with a meeting held on November 18, the WHO will convene more than 300 scientists to review evidence for more than 25 virus families and bacteria and “disease X,” the statement read. .
Experts said they would recommend a list of priority pathogens that need further research. The process includes both scientific and public health criteria, ANI reports.
The current list, published in 2017, includes Covid-19, Crimean Kon hemorrhagic fever, Ebola virus disease, Marburg virus disease, Lassa fever, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Contains nipa.
