A 5.4-magnitude earthquake hits Northern California

(KTXL) – A 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California Thursday afternoon at about 4:19 p.m., with shaking felt as far away as Sacramento.

Initial readings of the quake had a magnitude of 5.7, but the USGS website has updated its reading to 5.4.

The quake struck about 1.5 miles southwest of the East Shore community near Almanor Lake, about 165 miles northeast of Sacramento, according to the USGS.

The California Highway Patrol said the quake caused disruption at the agency’s Chico dispatch center, and that 911 lines are currently out of order. The agency said people in the area should call 530-332-1200 to report emergencies.
