Table Tennis: Hina Hayata wins epic q’final to secure worlds first medal
DURBAN, South Africa (Kyodo) — Japan’s Hina Hayata earned her first podium finish at the World Table Tennis Championships on Friday after knocking out China’s Wang Yidi 4-3 in the women’s singles quarterfinals.
Ranked 12th in the world, Hayata allowed third-ranked Wang to take the match in the final game, but held on to win 4-11, 11-3, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9 , 8-11 , 21-19 in Durban, South Africa.
Hayata trailed 10-8 in the decider, but got to deuce before scoring seven more match points in a marathon end of the encounter. The Japanese southpaw hit a backhand winner to seal the tie in an hour and 15 minutes.
“I’m really happy to have made it through to the singles semifinals,” said a tearful Hayata, who won all the singles, doubles and mixed doubles titles at this year’s national championships.
“I will jump in again in the next time-out, face the opponent with a strong mentality and do my best to play a good game again.”
The 22-year-old resident of Fukuoka prefecture is the first Japanese to win a world medal in women’s singles since Miu Hirano won bronze in 2017.
Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist and seventh-place finisher Mima Ito meanwhile lost 4-0 to fourth-placed Olympic gold medalist Chen Meng of China.
In men’s singles, fourth-seeded Tomokazu Harimoto missed out on the chance to become Japan’s first medalist in the event at the World Cup in 44 years after losing 4–2 to fifth-seeded Chinese Liang Jingkun in the quarterfinals.
