Melbourne earthquake: Little damage was reported in Victoria after a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck the city just before midnight

There were reports of minor damage to roads and homes in Victoria after a 3.8-magnitude earthquake shook the state for about 30 seconds.

The quake hit Sunbury, about 40km northwest of Melbourne’s CBD, on Sunday at around 11:41pm at a depth of 2km, according to GeoScience Australia.

Thousands of residents took to social media within minutes saying that tall houses and apartments shook or swayed in the sky from the powerful quake.

“Was that an earthquake in Melbourne? I’m on the 70th floor of Eureka Tower and the whole building is swaying a few metres,” one resident said on Twitter.

“Did anyone in southeast Melbourne think they just felt a really big earthquake? Bloody hell, the whole house just shook!” Another local wrote.

A third added, “I just came out of the house with a machete in my pajamas because it looked like our old house had been broken into… It was an earthquake, apparently.”

“I felt my whole building shaking for about three minutes,” said a Toorak resident.

Other Victorians quickly sent messages to family and friends to assure them of their safety.

Android users who were not woken up by the initial shaking of the ground on their mobile phones have just been alerted that an earthquake has just occurred.

A Melbourne radio station was live and out of a song when the 3.8 shake was caught on a studio camera.

Separately, one parent captured their sleeping baby waking up in their crib by the vibration of the baby monitor.

It has reportedly been felt as far away as Hobart in Tasmania.

There were also minor reports of damage to roads and homes, with residents sharing pictures of large cracks along their walls.

The earthquake follows a small earthquake of magnitude 1.7 recorded last Monday near Croydon.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake in 2021 caused damage along the Chapel St area of ​​Melbourne, with major damage to heritage buildings.
