After a strong start, San Jose is in a bit of a slump. The Earthquakes have had one win and three losses in their last six games, and have developed a bad habit of dropping points late. The Earthquakes keep the ball deep in their half, but the more dangerous possession was hard to come by.

Meanwhile in Seattle, the Sounders have found their fight again. Fatigue and injury threaten to derail that progress, but the young Seattle talent may step in to save the day. Let’s take a look at how Seattle dominates the Red Bulls, and how a shorthanded side can do better than the Earthquakes in the middle of the week.

Joao Paulo said the team needed to “be braver, more aggressive,” and it’s clear he took his own advice against the Red Bulls. He led the team in tackles and duels, and is bested in pass completions only by young Cody Baker, who continues to raise his level with every start. Jordan Morris’ unfortunate injury aside, Seattle’s only disappointment was in ending their chances. I’m reluctant to be so hard on Heber. While he misses some great chances outright, his playing and distribution continue to create chances. Have enough near misses stripped him of confidence?
