Nashville officials confirm presence of West Nile virus in mosquito samples
NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WKRN) – A population of mosquitoes caught by a pest manager in Nashville has tested positive for West Nile virus, Metro Public Health announced Tuesday.
The Department of Health’s Pest Control Division retrieved the mosquitoes from a trap near the intersection of Bell Road and Anderson Road in southeast Nashville, officials said. As of Tuesday, no human cases have been reported.
Health officials said they were taking additional steps to educate residents in affected areas and monitor the disease. Pest management will revisit the area to install additional traps and spray mosquito larvae if present.
The health department said residents in affected areas will also be given leaflets with information on how to protect themselves from mosquito bites and how to reduce stagnant water where mosquitoes can lay eggs. It says.
Metro Public Health began catching mosquitoes throughout Davidson County in May and sending them to the Tennessee Department of Health lab for testing. Always apply insecticide if there are larvae. However, there are no plans to kill the adults.
Department of Health officials have advised residents throughout Davidson County to take steps to reduce mosquito breeding areas. Also this:
- Reduce or eliminate all standing water in your yard, especially children’s toys, bird baths, clogged gutters, tires, flower pots, trash cans, wheelbarrows, etc.
- Aerate your ornamental pool or fill it with gambusia fish.
- Apply mosquito soaks to standing water areas on your property.
- Cut away overgrown vegetation where mosquitoes tend to hide.
Health officials also recommend taking the following steps to avoid mosquito bites:
- Limit time outdoors at dusk and at night when mosquitoes are present.
- If you must be outdoors, wear mosquito repellent products approved for use by the CDC. This includes products containing DEET, picaridin and lemon eucalyptus oil.
- Wear shoes, socks, long-sleeved shirts, and trousers when spending time outdoors from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most prevalent. Clothing should be light in color and made of tightly woven materials to keep mosquitoes away from your skin. Pants should be tucked into shoes or socks and collars should be buttoned.
- Make sure windows and doors have screens and are in good repair
