Sand Point docks damage the way to the harbor in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake

A 7.8-magnitude Elliott earthquake Tuesday evening Tuesday evening triggered tsunami warnings in communities across coastal Alaska, from Homer to Onalaska.

Sand Point is a fishing community with a population of about a thousand people, located about 550 miles southwest of Anchorage in the eastern part of the Aleutian Chain. The earthquake damaged both the city sidewalks, which it used to land the M / V Tustumena ferry and cargo boats, and damaged the road to the port.

The floor sank in a warehouse on the old Sand Point wharf, causing a major crack across the length of the cement, according to city director Jordan Keeler. He said that the engineering team will examine the damage in the next week or so, and he is sure it looks worse than it really is.

“We have two berths, both closed and effective immediately, so we can have a check to verify the damage to the new basin and the old basin,” Keeler said.

Meanwhile, closing dock docks may mean cargo shipments will be canceled until they re-open. He added that this could affect the ability of the island community to obtain fresh food.

All things were considered, and despite the damage caused by the earthquake, Keeler said things went smoothly.

“I am glad that no one was hurt,” he said. “Everyone was safe, and given the scale of the earthquake, how little damage we saw, we were lucky.”

After the earthquake, Sand Point received a tsunami warning, and was the first community to expect a wave. Ultimately, the community only recorded a wave less than a foot high, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.

The community tsunami siren sounded and the evacuation to the local school was organized, even with only two public safety officers in the community, Keeler said.

“We had people from the Trident factory going to the evacuation center,” Keeler said. “We had members of the community living in low areas, and so were the people associated with the commercial fishing fleet who went to the evacuation center.”

But he added that given the COVID-19 pandemic, it was unusual to see community members in the same space as workers from the Trident Seafood Processing Facility, which employs up to 400 people.

“Trident has a company-wide policy not to leave the building,” Keeler said. “So this was the first time this season that there was no close remote interaction between the community and the Trident Factory staff.”

He added that the healers and members of the community did not gather in the same room.

So far, there are no known cases of COVID-19 at Sand Point.
