Boston Celtics father Enes Kanters released from prison but can’t leave Turkey: it would be amazing to see him here
Boston Celtics big man Enes Kanter has spoken out publicly for years against the Turkish government, insulting Recep Tayyip Erdogan – the Turkish president who jailed Kanters ‘father for supporting Erdogans’ opponent.
Finally, last month, Kanters’ father was released from Turkish prison after seven years behind bars.
Wow! I could cry Kanter tweeted at the time. Today I found out that 7 years after I arrested my dad, took him to a kangaroo court and accused him of being a criminal just because he was my dad. MY DAD HAS BEEN RELEASED! This is due to the pressure we have put on the Turkish regime. They could no longer prevent him from his freedom because of the light we all put on this matter!
Thursday, in an apparition on the Gino Time podcast, Kanter said that although his father has been released, he still cannot travel or communicate with Kanter.
The travel ban is in place right now, (so) he obviously can’t just come here to America and start living here, but the latest one was just waiting to see if the travel ban is lifted or not. , Kanter said. It would be amazing to see him here again and live in America. He’s going to be able to come to my games and everything. It’s going to be very exciting.
Kanter, who has previously compared Erdogan to Hitler, was issued an arrest warrant in Turkey in 2017. He has since spoken out without excuse against Erdogan.
Sadly, this means that Kanters’ father – while released from prison – has still not been able to communicate with his son.
I’m talking to my brother, Kanter said. They said he was fine, very happy and felt very happy to finally be free. I think it’s really a huge blessing to bring it out.
Kanter, who once told CNN that Erdogan has locked up tens of thousands of dissidents, still has no plans to quell his calls for freedom and justice in Turkey.
I never pay attention, Kanter said on Gino Time. In any situation, I just say what I think. People ask me to keep quiet until he happens, but it’s just one. There are so many in prison right now, so I’m going to keep talking about it no matter what.
