Ontario's top doctor warns of 'possible' measles outbreak
Ontario's top doctor is warning public health units to prepare for more cases and a “potential outbreak” of measles as infections rise in Europe.
“There are currently four active measles cases in Canada, two of which are in Ontario. part of the skin and city of toronto,” Dr. Kieran Moore, the province's chief medical officer of health, wrote in a letter to the Ontario Ministry of Health and local public health agencies on Tuesday.
“Given the dramatic increase in cases globally, Ontario's health system partners must prepare for continued cases and the potential for further spread.”
Both cases in Ontario were children who had recently traveled outside of Canada. In at least one case, the child was hospitalized.
The memo acknowledges that as the March holidays approach, health care workers should encourage vaccination and report potential infections.
“Although measles is no longer considered endemic in Canada, outbreaks can occur if susceptible people (such as unvaccinated people) travel to or return to countries where measles is endemic. ,” Moore wrote.
“Importation and resulting community transmission can and do cause measles outbreaks in Canada.”
Measles is highly contagious, and symptoms include a red rash, fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and fatigue.
Viral infections are spread through the air and through close contact. Symptoms can begin to appear within 7 to 21 days after exposure.
In 2023, there were 12 confirmed cases of measles in Canada.
