Ministry of Health wants to prevent tick-borne diseases with new online resource
(WJET/WFXP) — May is National Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and we're launching a new dashboard to share helpful tick-related tips.
On Monday, May 13, the Pennsylvania Department of Health released the following report: Tick-Borne Disease DashboardThe purpose is to provide Pennsylvania residents and health care professionals with information about ticks and tick-borne diseases.
This data includes the number of disease cases across Pennsylvania and tips on how to successfully avoid and eliminate pests.
“Pennsylvania has great outdoor recreation opportunities, and we want to provide as much information as possible to our residents to enjoy them safely,” said Acting Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen. “Taking proper precautions can help you avoid Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases that can lead to serious illness. As pediatricians, we especially encourage children and pets to play outside. We always recommend checking for ticks afterward.”
Lyme disease is the most commonly reported tick-borne disease in Pennsylvania, ranking 9th in the United States in the number of Lyme disease reports per capita in 2022.
The Ministry of Health recommends the following tips to reduce your chances of being bitten by a tick.
- Stay in the center of the trail and avoid areas with tall grass or fallen leaves.
- use EPA approved insect repellent on exposed skin
- Use products containing 0.5% permethrin to pre-treat shoes, clothing, and gear.
- Wear brightly colored clothing to help spot ticks that are crawling on you.
- Perform a full-body tick check (including pets) after spending time in tick habitat
- Take a bath/shower within 2 hours of coming indoors
- Place clothes worn outdoors in a hot dryer for 10 minutes to kill dust mites.
