UVA Expert Shares Update on Avian Flu Cases
ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – Health officials are monitoring the spread of avian influenza as it can jump from birds to poultry, mammals and, in rare cases, humans.
Now, University of Virginia (UVA) Health officials are discussing possible future impacts.
The virus is being monitored by health officials, and while cases are rising across the country, no cases have been confirmed locally. People who work with animals are at high risk for infection, and experts say everyone should be vigilant about the disease.
The CDC has reported at least four cases of avian influenza among dairy cows in the past four months, in addition to nearly a dozen cases tracked among birds and poultry.
UVA infectious disease experts explained that bird flu is a highly contagious virus that can in some cases infect humans.
“Many agricultural workers have poor connections to healthcare and may not be able to take time off work to get treatment if they get sick, so I think we may be underestimating the true number of infections that are occurring in humans,” Dr. Patrick Jackson said.
Dr Jackson explained that so far bird flu has only spread between sick animals and humans, which is a good thing.
“We've seen only mild respiratory infections in people who have had direct contact with sick animals, and we haven't seen any human-to-human transmission,” Dr. Jackson said. “As long as we maintain this, I think the risk to the general public is low.”
Experts encourage everyone, whether they work on a farm or not, to consider getting a flu shot this year to protect themselves and others from the flu.
“The reason we're concerned about a lot of people getting regular seasonal flu is because if you get infected with two different flu strains, they can recombine in your body and a new flu strain can evolve quickly. That's how the 2009 swine flu, for example, emerged,” Dr. Jackson said. “We're trying to prevent that from happening.”
