A breakthrough in the treatment of HER2-positive, treatment-resistant breast cancer
Researchers from HMRI's Cancer Detection and Treatment Research Program, Dr. Chen Chen Jiang, Professor Hubert Hondermarck and Dr. Luiza Steffens-Reinhardt, have made significant advances in the treatment of HER2-positive breast cancer.

HER2-positive breast cancer accounts for 20% of all breast cancers and affects approximately 5,000 Australians each year. It often spreads to the brain, lungs, and other organs.
HER2-positive breast cancer is one of the most difficult subtypes to treat, along with triple-negative breast cancer.
“Although approximately 90 percent of cases are detected early and can be treated with chemotherapy and targeted therapy, approximately 20 percent of early-stage patients experience relapse, which is often incurable and life-threatening. '' says Dr. Stephens Reinhardt.
“Although there are no known treatments yet, our research shows very promising results for repurposed anti-cancer drugs directed at highly specific targets.

Although the drug is being studied in preclinical models, the drug is already tested and approved for use in humans and is expected to advance quickly to Phase II clinical trials.
The researchers received a Cancer Council grant this year and are validating their results with oncologist collaborators.
The study, which has taken two years to date, was initially funded by the generosity of HMRI donors as part of an HMRI Charitable Grant.
