Kona man saves three dogs in a lava tube during earthquake

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – On Sunday, 60-year-old Kawika Singson, a Kona resident, made a long trek and then a mile into a remote forest in Pahala for a rescue mission unlike any other. He had rescued hounds in lava tubes before, but never three dogs at a time.

Bella, Boa and Steven fell into a narrow lava tube after chasing a pig. The dogs were trapped for about six hours in the dark, cold and wet.

“I'm surprised that the dogs, when they got there, weren't hurt, because it was just a drop, a steep 25 or 30 foot drop,” Singson said.

He added: “Oh my God, these dogs were healthy.”

Take each puppy out one by one using ropes and a harness. Each dog was lifted over a steep ledge and through a narrow opening.

“It's a really special moment because I feel a dog surrendering itself to me and saying, 'Okay, get me out of here,'” Singson said.

In the middle of the rescue operation, a 3.2 magnitude earthquake occurred. Singson says the hunters sensed it, but he was so focused on the dogs, he didn't notice anything until he reached the surface.

“I put my hand on the ground, and I actually felt the ground shaking when I got back up,” Singson said.

He added: “I'm afraid I'll be in a lava tube when there's an earthquake.”

Singson needed hunters' help to get out, and he says he tries to push away his fears of falling, falling rocks and dangerous animals that could hurt him.

His first animal rescue was five years ago, and the feeling of relief is his reward.

Singson says he can be contacted via social media to help search for people's animals. He says he will only go out searching when the animals are wearing a tracking device, as they were in this situation.
