Fairfax Task Force 1 returns home after responding to the Venezuela earthquake

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (7News) – Members of Virginia Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 return home to Fairfax County on Monday after completing their deployment to earthquake-ravaged Venezuela.

The Fairfax-based team announced Monday morning that it had been discharged by the U.S. State Department and was expected to return to Northern Virginia later Monday evening.

The team was sent to Venezuela last month after two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 occurred near the country’s Caribbean coast. According to the authorities, more than 2,000 people have been killed so far, thousands injured, and many others are still missing.

Throughout the mission, the team shared updates from the disaster area, documenting search and rescue operations, including locating victims trapped under collapsed buildings and using dog teams to search piles of debris.

The US Embassy in Caracas thanked the US search and rescue teams on Monday.

“I want to thank them for their exceptional work on the ground. Their courage and professionalism in Venezuela saved lives and brought hope at a very critical moment,” the embassy wrote in a post on X.

This deployment was part of a broader U.S. humanitarian response that includes more than $300 million in life-saving assistance to people affected by the earthquakes.
