Opposition requisitions Punjab Assembly session to discuss ‘rape of two foreigners’ – Pakistan

LAHORE: The opposition in the Punjab Assembly has formally submitted a demand for convening an emergency session to question the provincial government over the incident in which two foreign women were allegedly raped.

The requisition presented by Punjab Assembly leader Moeen Riaz Qureshi along with Sheikh Imtiaz, Rana Shahbaz and Farrukh Javed Moon was also aimed at discussing the collapse of the rural economy in the province.

The opposition has termed the rape incident involving foreign nationals a critical blow that has seriously tarnished the reputation of the province and Pakistan in the world.

In the requisition, Qureshi said the provincial government has completely failed to protect citizens, pointing to an alarming increase in incidents of street crime, dacoities, murders, kidnappings and systemic violence against women, creating insecurity among the population.

Beyond the immediate public order crisis, the opposition demanded a comprehensive legislative review of the deteriorating conditions of detention and treatment of political prisoners.

Qureshi alleged serious human rights violations in Punjab’s prisons, specifically citing the lack of basic health facilities.

The requisition expressed serious concerns over the health and treatment of incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, demanding that he be afforded his legal rights, including family visits and immediate access to personal doctors under prison rules.

The opposition leader called for an independent investigation into allegations of torture of political workers and the “mysterious deaths” of several PTI activists after their release from jail and custody.

To compound the problems of the provincial administration, the PTI Kissan wing has launched a full-scale attack on Punjab’s agricultural and rural policies.

On the occasion of World Rural Development Day, PTI Punjab Kissan Wing general secretary Mian Ejaz Shafi dismissed the government’s flagship initiatives, including the Kisan card and tubewell solarization projects, calling them “cosmetic publicity stunts completely detached from ground realities”.

Shafi mentioned that rural poverty in Punjab reached 23.3 percent in the 2024-25 financial year, allegedly caused by broader economic mismanagement that pushed 27 million Pakistanis below the poverty line over the past six years.

He said rural food insecurity has increased from 15.9% to a staggering 24.4%, forcing families to spend most of their income on food while battling extreme malnutrition.

He also drew attention to a devastating public health crisis brewing in the countryside, noting that 40% of children under five are stunted.

Shafi warned that the situation was even more critical in southern Punjab, where more than 46 percent of children were underweight and 56 percent suffered from anemia.

With wheat production costs running at Rs 4,000 per maund and official procurement mechanisms failing, Shafi ridiculed the government’s plan to build 2,400 “model villages” as an empty political gesture for a province that contains over 27,000 villages, demanding structural and sustainable policy revisions to save the crumbling agrarian framework.
