Xi gives Trump an ‘easy’ victory, paves way for next summit
(Bloomberg) — President Xi Jinping’s agreement to release an imprisoned Christian pastor at the request of President Donald Trump demonstrated an improvement in the state of relations between the United States and China ahead of tough negotiations looming ahead of their next summit in September.

The political choreography surrounding the release of Pastor Ezra Jin Mingri, the leader of a prominent Chinese underground church, was underscored by his arrival in Los Angeles on July 4 – just as Americans were celebrating their nation’s 250th anniversary.
This suggests a steady evolution in relations between the superpowers, from the absence of high-level contacts years ago to a point where Beijing is now comfortable acceding to some of Washington’s diplomatic demands. Nonetheless, the chances of a broader rapprochement appear limited, as both sides continue to roll out trade and investment measures aimed at reducing their mutual vulnerability. “Pastor Jin’s release suggests that there is progress on relatively easy issues in US-China relations – perhaps to smooth relations ahead of upcoming Trump-Xi meetings,” said Ja Ian Chong, associate professor of political science at the National University of Singapore. “That said, issues remain regarding technology and trade restrictions.”
After his visit to Beijing in May, Trump said Monday that he planned to meet with Xi in Washington around September 24, weeks before a year-long trade truce expires.
Jin’s release appears to be the first such humanitarian measure taken by China that Trump has secured since his “historic” summit with Xi. This could now raise hopes for further action, although Beijing has made clear that there are some red lines.
Trump said that when discussing the fate of former Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai, Xi indicated the matter would be “difficult.” Lai was sentenced to 20 years in prison for collusion and sedition, one of the highest-profile measures in Beijing’s broader crackdown on the former British colony over the past decade.
The president raised both cases directly with Xi and will always defend religious freedom around the world, a U.S. official said. Asked if Trump had mentioned cases other than Jin and Lai, the official declined to answer directly.
