Intense bombing, mass displacement and lack of access in northern Gaza forced the postponement of the polio vaccination campaign
Due to escalating violence, intense bombardment, mass displacement orders and the lack of assured humanitarian breaks in most of northern Gaza, the Gaza Polio Technical Committee, including the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the Agency The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and partners were forced to postpone the third phase of the polio vaccination campaign, which was due to start today. This latest phase of the ongoing campaign aimed to vaccinate 119,279 children across northern Gaza.
Current conditions, including ongoing attacks on civilian infrastructure, continue to threaten the security and movement of people in northern Gaza, making it impossible for families to safely bring their children for vaccinations and for health workers to work.
All logistics, supplies and trained human resources were prepared to vaccinate children across northern Gaza with the second dose of the new oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2), following the first round conducted across the Gaza Strip from September 1 to 12, 2024. However, with given that the area currently approved for temporary humanitarian breaks has been greatly reduced—now limited to Gaza City alone, a significant reduction from the first round—many children in northern Gaza would miss a dose of polio vaccine.
To stop poliovirus transmission, at least 90% of all children in every community and neighborhood must be vaccinated – a prerequisite for an effective campaign to end the outbreak and prevent further spread. Humanitarian breaks are critical to its success, enabling partners to deliver vaccination supplies to health facilities, families to safely access vaccination sites, and mobile teams of health workers to reach children in their communities. Delaying the second dose of nOPV2 within six weeks reduces the effect of two closely spaced rounds on simultaneously boosting the immunity of all children and interrupting poliovirus transmission. The fact that a significant number of children miss their second dose of vaccine will seriously compromise efforts to stop the transmission of poliovirus in Gaza. It could also lead to the further spread of poliovirus in the Gaza Strip and neighboring countries, with the risk of more children being paralysed.
Since the launch of the second round of the polio campaign in Gaza on 14 October 2024, 442,855 children under the age of ten have been successfully vaccinated in the central and southern parts of the Gaza Strip – 94% of the target in those areas. A total of 357,802 children between the ages of two and ten received vitamin A supplements as part of efforts to integrate the polio vaccine with other basic health services in Gaza.
It is imperative to stop the polio outbreak as soon as possible, before more children are paralyzed and the poliovirus spreads further. It is therefore crucial that the vaccination campaign in northern Gaza is facilitated by the implementation of humanitarian breaks, ensuring access to eligible children wherever they are. WHO and UNICEF call on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians, health workers and civilian infrastructure, such as schools, shelters, hospitals, and reiterate their call for an immediate ceasefire.
