CDC study suggests inmates should have been tested in groups
As of mid-August, more than 95,000 people in prison tested positive for this disease, an increase of 10% from the previous week.
Columbus, Ohio — A correctional facility that resisted mass coronavirus testing for inmates erred in a decision to test only symptomatic inmates, leading to an initial underrepresentation, according to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Suggested.
This week’s study examined 13 prisons and prisons in California, Colorado, Ohio, and Texas, and three federal prisons in unspecified states.
The study found that most institutions had waited days or weeks before the first confirmed case of COVID-19 and group detention tests started.
Mass examinations are expensive, time consuming staff, and it is not always possible to relocate living spaces for prisoners based on the results, the revision authorities told researchers.
Still, the study found that the number of infected prisoners was “probably underestimated,” just by testing inmates with coronavirus symptoms. Symptom-based examinations also risk prisoners concealing their symptoms, fearing that they will be removed from their regular prisons and avoided by other prisoners.
“A wide range of tests can provide a more accurate assessment of prevalence and generate data that can help control infection,” the researchers said.
In an unidentified federal prison, where group screening was delayed almost six weeks after the first coronavirus case was identified, 77% of the inmates were found to be positive at group screening.
In Ohio Prison, where the mass screening was delayed almost two weeks after the first case, 87% of the inmates were found to be positive at the screening.
The study also suggested that multiple retesting of inmates after the first negative test may help control infection rates.
The study concludes, “Mass test, regardless of symptoms, can be combined with regular retests to identify infections and support the prevention of widespread infections in orthodontic and detention settings.”
A second CDC study focusing on Puerto Rico reported only two cases of COVID-19 and no deaths in state prisons.
The study found that Puerto Rico restricted hospitalization for all new prisoners to one institution, massively tested everyone regardless of symptoms, and adopted strict quarantine until test results were available.
The researchers conclude that Puerto Rico’s efforts should serve as a case study to protect imprisoned people from the coronavirus.
As of mid-August, more than 95,000 people in prison increased 10% from the previous week, according to data compiled by the Marshall Project, a non-profit news organization focused on criminal justice, and Associated Press. Showed a positive reaction. ..
The prisoner’s new case hit a record high on August 14, after slowing in June. Growth over the last few weeks has been driven by outbreaks in Idaho, Iowa, Oregon and South Carolina, as well as a surge in prisoners who test positive in California, Florida, Texas and federal prisons. It was
Marshall Project/AP data show that more than 62,000 prisoners tested positive have recovered and at least 803 inmates have died.
Of the prison staff, more than 21,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported, of which 65 have died.
