The Missouri State Emergency Management Agency is hosting the 8th Annual Earthquake Summit

POPPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (KFVS) – Hundreds attended the 8th Annual Earthquake Summit at Black River Amphitheater on Tuesday, March 24.

The event brought together first responders and emergency management officials from across the region to talk about preparedness and what recovery could look like in the event of a major earthquake.

“We come together to learn about earthquakes, learn how to prepare, and learn how the state will support your efforts in the aftermath of an earthquake,” said Melissa Friel, director of preparedness for the State Emergency Management Agency.

The summit also focused on individual preparedness, including what families should be prepared for at home, Friel said.

“What should your disaster kit look like? What should you have for your family? How many days of water should you have on hand?” She said.

Medical preparedness was another major theme.

Roger Mattei of Zone Medical demonstrated AEDs and emergency medical kits, saying equipment like AEDs or severe bleeding/trauma kits can be life-saving.

“Having an AED or kit ready for severe bleeding and severe trauma can make the difference between life and death,” Mattei said.

In the event of a catastrophic earthquake, damage to roads, bridges and fallen trees could delay emergency response, making immediate care even more important, Mattei added.

“If we can treat the patient in time, we will get a very good positive result. If we don’t, the results are usually negative,” he said.

Friel said the overarching mission is to ensure communities are able to care for people in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.

“We have to be prepared to take care of those affected by the disaster, and make sure we can meet their basic needs in the wake of a catastrophic event like the New Madrid earthquake,” she said. “We have to be able to take care of our people.”
