A 5.5 magnitude earthquake was recorded in APY territory near the Northern Territory and South Australia border
Geoscience Australia says a remote community in the APY Lands region has woken up to shaking shelves and oscillating lights caused by a 5.5-magnitude earthquake.
The tremor was recorded at 3:56 a.m. on Sunday at Amata, formerly Musgrave Park, near the border of South Australia and the Northern Territory.
Jonathan Bathgate, senior seismologist at the Australian Geosciences Authority, said the agency had received about 30 reports from people who felt the quake.
“It woke up a number of people from Yulara and throughout the area with some light to moderate tremors,” he told 891 ABC Adelaide.
“Some of the light fixtures are swinging from the ceiling and some things are rattling off the shelves and that kind of thing, so it was an early morning wake-up call for quite a few people.”
Many people on social media reported that they woke up to the earthquake in Yulara, Uluru and Mutitjulu.

He said its magnitude was equivalent to the devastating Newcastle earthquake in 1989, which killed and injured dozens, and caused a damage bill worth $4 billion.
He added: “It is an earthquake of the same size, and it occurred in a quite remote area of the country and not near a populated centre, so there is a possibility that it could have some significant impacts.”
Bathgate said that the remote area witnessed several aftershocks after 9 a.m., ranging in intensity between 2.8 and 3.6 on the Richter scale, but many people would not have felt them unless they were near the epicenter.
“In general, with aftershock sequences, they become less frequent and smaller over time, but this does not rule out another larger earthquake between this sequence as well, so it is difficult to predict,” he said.
He says the area has a seismic history, and is “capable of some large-scale earthquakes.”
A magnitude 5.4 shock was recorded in Ernabella (Bocatja) in 2012, which at the time was the largest inland earthquake in 15 years.
“Then in 2016, there was a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in the Petermann Range, and that earthquake was a very large earthquake with 20-kilometre-long faults left in the landscape after that earthquake,” Bathgate said.
