Which football team does each Formula 1 driver support?
After another exciting season, the 2026 UEFA Champions League reaches its conclusion tonight as holders Paris Saint-Germain look to defend their title against new Premier League champions Arsenal – and we know at least four F1 drivers will be keeping a close eye on the match in Budapest.
Arsenal fan Lewis Hamilton will be hoping north London can claim their first-ever Champions League crown, while French trio Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon and Isack Hadjar will be in the blue corner to support the Paris team. However, we’re sure the rest of the paddock will be following the match too, as there are quite a few football fans on the grid – let’s see which teams they all support…
Pierre Gasly, Esteban Ocon and Isack Hadjar – PSG
Paris Saint-Germain is the most successful team in France, with a total of fourteen league titles, four European cups and 58 trophies. So it’s no surprise that they have a huge fan base, including no fewer than three F1 drivers.
As mentioned above, Gasly, Ocon and Hadjar are all big fans, and all three were present for PSG’s 2-0 win over Liverpool in the quarter-final earlier this year.
The French will be keen to see the Parisians defend their title after last year’s 5-0 defeat of Inter Milan gave PSG their first Champions League crown.
It was an emotional victory for Hadjar and Gasly – also co-owners of French football club FC Versailles – who watched the match together during the Barcelona race weekend before appearing in PSG kit on Sunday. Keep an eye out for some fitting celebrations from these three at the Monaco Grand Prix if PSG emerge victorious…
Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri – Arsenal
Hamilton is an Arsenal fan from his youth, largely due to his sister’s strong encouragement to support the red half of London when he was a child.
The 41-year-old will be desperate for the London side to finally claim the Champions League after their heartbreaking defeat to Barcelona in the final 20 years ago. The Ferrari driver was delighted after the Gunners won the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years earlier this month, posting “Come On You Gunners” on his Instagram Story shortly after the competition was secured.
In a congratulatory message before tonight’s match, posted on social media, Hamilton said how proud he was of the team, thanked them for the memories of this season and told them to enjoy the last game.
Another driver who will be cheering on Arsenal tonight is Oscar Piastri, who describes himself as an Arsenal fan “by default” as his partner’s family are all Gunners supporters.
Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso – Real Madrid
While Real Madrid may have been knocked out by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals this season, Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso have had plenty to celebrate as Los Blancos fans over the years.
Madrid are the most successful club in the history of the Champions League, having won the competition an impressive 15 times, including the most recent in 2024. Both Sainz and Alonso support the club through the influence of their fathers – Carlos Sainz Senior even had trials for the team as a teenager – attending matches whenever they could and often arriving in the F1 paddock wearing Madrid shirts.
Nico Hülkenberg – Bayern Munich
Nico Hulkenberg was at the Allianz Arena to watch PSG beat Bayern Munich 6-5 in the semi-final earlier this month.
As heartbreaking as that match was for the German, it was another season of relentless domestic success for the Bavarian giants, who scored 122 goals on their way to a record 35th Bundesliga title – the second-highest ever in a season in the top five.
The Audi driver is also a big fan of his national team – and enjoyed the Germans’ 2-0 victory over then Haas teammate Kevin Magnussen’s Denmark at the 2024 European Championship.
Arvid Lindblad and Lando Norris – Manchester United
Manchester United have one of the largest fan bases in world football, so it was perhaps inevitable that at least one of the drivers in F1 would be a Red Devils supporter.
Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad is a fan of the thirteen-time Premier League champions, who last won the Champions League in 2008, when Lindblad was less than a year old. The Brit will dream that United’s return to the competition next season will bring even greater success.
Elsewhere, Lando Norris was more of a MotoGP fan when he was younger, but did follow the red half of Manchester when legendary player Cristiano Ronaldo was at the club. The McLaren man also spent part of his childhood attending Bristol City matches due to his father’s connections at the club.
Charles Leclerc – AS Monaco
Charles Leclerc is loyal to his roots and supports his local team and the French top division AS Monaco.
Monaco have won the competition eight times and even completed the double over PSG this season, but fell agonizingly short of a shock in the Champions League, losing 5-4 to the Parisians in the knockout stages.
Leclerc also enjoys playing football and regularly participates in charity matches in the Principality with other F1 stars.
Max Verstappen – PSV Eindhoven
Max Verstappen is another driver who supports a team partly through paternal influence, as he regularly attended PSV Eindhoven matches with his father Jos as a child. It was another successful year for the Red Bull driver team, with PSV securing its third title in a row and 27th overall.
The Dutchman is a huge football fan and regularly works with members of the national team, including Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, and former PSV player and all-time top scorer of the Dutch team, Memphis Depay.
Kimi Antonelli – Bologna
Kimi Antonelli was born in Bologna, a city located between the Imola circuit and the Ferrari base in Maranello. His father initially wanted him to play football, but, perhaps unsurprisingly given where he grew up, young Kimi caught the karting bug instead.
However, Antonelli still shows passion for football and supports his local team from Bologna, having met the squad at last year’s Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
All of Bologna’s eight Italian league titles were won long before Antonelli was born (their last was in 1964), but the Mercedes driver has enjoyed the past two seasons with a Coppa Italia title in 2025, along with solid Europa League and Champions League campaigns.
George Russel – Wolverhampton Wanderers
As a long-term Wolves season ticket holder, George Russell’s father has taken the Mercedes man to plenty of games over the years, and it has clearly rubbed off on him.
The Brit has since returned to the Midlands club to face his Wanderers side on a few occasions, although it has been a difficult season in the Premier League as Wolves were relegated to the Championship.
Franco Colapinto – Boca Juniors
The football culture in Argentina is intense yet electric, and coming from Buenos Aires, it was only natural that Franco Colapinto would support one of the region’s famous teams. He belongs to the city’s blue and yellow side and supports Boca Juniors, who have won an impressive 35 division titles and six Copa Libertadores, the South American version of the Champions League.
In 2022, the Alpine rider made a trip to the famous La Bombonera stadium, before stepping onto the field and receiving his own special shirt!
Sergio Perez – Club America
Sergio Perez has been a long-time fan of Mexico City-based team Club America, one of the country’s most successful teams.
The team plays at the nearly 90,000-capacity Estadio Azteca, and it’s not hard to see why they have such a large following, as they have won a record 16 league titles and seven CONCACAF Champions Cup/Champions League titles.
