Britain’s special relationship with the United States is “meaningless” unless it signs an “arms and shield” agreement with the United States and matches its military capabilities, War Secretary Donald Trump has warned.
Pete Hegseth, speaking in Singapore, said “model allies” who comply with U.S. demands would benefit from arms sales and access to intelligence, while allies seen as “free riding” on U.S. capabilities would be punished.
Referring to his conversation with the British Defense Secretary, the politician said: [Richard] Males [the Australian defence minister] And I know John Healey is probably the most blunt with his closest friends about what our capabilities are and where they need to be to lock down their weapons and shields considering the threat to the world.”

He continued, “You can’t just say, ‘Oh, we’ve been friends for a long time, so let’s work together.’ It’s ‘We’ve been friends for a long time, so it’s better to have the same capabilities as us, because otherwise our alliance is meaningless.’”
Prime Minister Hegseth also praised countries such as South Korea, Japan and Vietnam, pledging to bring the military-strengthening allies “to the forefront” of closer relations.
“We will prioritize cooperation with exemplary allies. We are moving them to the front lines – rapid arms sales, deep industrial-based cooperation, increased intelligence sharing – the list goes on and the benefits go on,” he told the Shangri-La Dialogue conference hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a London-based think tank. [are] many.
“But those who believe they can continue to free ride on the generosity of American taxpayers, hear us out now: The days of America subsidizing the defense of rich countries are over.”
He added, “Allies who refuse to step up and do their part in our common defense will face a clear change in the way we do business.”
The audience at the conference included several Defense Ministers from around the world, including Mr. Healey.
Relations between Britain and the United States are increasingly disintegrating as President Trump repeatedly accuses Britain and other European allies of not spending enough on defense. He also criticized Sir Keir Starmer for not siding with the US in the Iran war.
Earlier this month, Prime Minister Hegseth said in a written statement to parliament that the failure of allies to support the US military offensive against Iran was “unconscionable” and warned: “We will remember.”
This comes as questions are growing about the government’s will to increase defense spending as the defense investment plan has been delayed for a long time.
John Healey says the Aukus countries are ‘hitting the accelerator’ with an agreement to develop underwater drone capabilities (PA).
Sir Keir pledged to spend 5% of GDP on “national security” by 2035, including 3.5% on “core defence”. The plan is expected to be announced in the fall.
Meanwhile, the Treasury is yet to agree the exact details of the funding increase, with the report saying there is a funding gap of around £28 billion in existing plans.
On Friday Pensions Minister Torsten Bell said the plan would be presented “when ready” amid reports of divisions in the cabinet over the plan, with the Conservatives trying to force a deadline for the government to publish its review.
The party plans to push for a vote on an amendment to the Armed Forces Bill that would require Prime Minister Healy to lay out plans for defense investment before the House of Commons and the Lords within a month after the Royal Assent Bill comes into force.
Sir George Robertson, a former Labor defense secretary and one of the authors of the Strategic Defense Review, used a lecture last month to condemn the government’s “corrosive complacency” in defense spending and accused the Prime Minister of being unwilling to make the “necessary investments”.
