Sad news: Former Chief of Army Staff and Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia Ryamizard Ryacudu dies at 76
Jakarta, HMS Times — Sad news comes to us from the Indonesian army and government. Former Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia, General TNI (Ret.) Ryamizard Ryacudu, died at the age of 76.
General (retired) TNI Ryamizard Ryacudu breathed his last at Gatot Soebroto Central Military Hospital (RSPAD), Jakarta, on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 2:03 p.m. WIB, after undergoing treatment for the illness he suffered from. The news of his death was confirmed by the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia.
Ryamizard Ryacudu is known as one of Indonesia’s senior military officials with a long career in the Indonesian National Army (TNI). He served as Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (KSAD) during the period 2002-2005 before entering government and was appointed Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia during the 2014-2019 administration of President Joko Widodo.
Born in Palembang on April 21, 1950, Ryamizard graduated from the Indonesian Armed Forces Academy (Akabri) in 1974. Throughout his military career, he rose to prominence as an infantry officer who held several strategic positions, including Commander of the Kostrad and Chief of Army Staff.
While Minister of Defense, Ryamizard actively promoted the national defense program and strengthened the national defense system. His name is also widely known as one of the military figures who influenced the dynamics of Indonesian security and defense in recent decades.
The passing of Ryamizard Ryacudu has left deep sadness to his family, his retired TNI military colleagues and various groups who had worked with the deceased in service to the nation and state.
