President Donald Trump urges MLB to implement salary cap

Aboard Air Force One while answering questions from political reporters on Friday, President Donald Trump was asked about Major League Baseball and the possibility of implementing a salary cap in the upcoming offseason (via USA Today). The president has made clear his support for a cap.

“If you don’t have a salary cap, you don’t have a sport, because they can’t help it,” Trump said. “Football has a salary cap. They should have done it a long time ago.

“It’s frankly shocking that they didn’t set a cap many years ago,” he said, possibly referring to the 1994-95 strike. “They had a chance to succeed, but they blew it.”

MLB’s current collective bargaining agreement expires next offseason and discussions between players and owners are expected to be quite contentious. One of the hot topics, obviously, is the looming threat of a salary cap – more specifically, the collective desire of owners to implement one against staunch opposition from players.

Both sides in the impending fight have already begun laying out their talking points. MLB proposed a salary cap of $245.3 million as well as a floor of $171.2 million. There are currently nine teams above that cap and 12 teams below the floor, with the Marlins and Guardians sitting at nearly $100 million. The Dodgers are nearly $170 million over the proposed cap, while the Mets and Yankees are over $100 million over the proposed cap.

On the other side, the MLBPA also made a proposal that does not include a salary cap and the union continues to view a hard cap as a failure.

“Our goal is to preserve and improve baseball’s market system, rewarding competition on and off the field. Additionally, the players’ proposals include increased revenue sharing, initially guaranteeing each small market club a minimum of $240 million in revenue each season,” said Bruce Meyer, interim executive director of the MLBPA. “This enhanced revenue sharing includes additional protections to ensure clubs prioritize winning over profit. Ultimately, our proposals are designed to build on the incredible momentum and popularity of our sport around the world.”

MLB has been setting revenue records on an annual basis for some time now. In 2025, Forbes estimated that MLB generated approximately $12.5 billion.
