UK-led Operation Interflex enters new phase of training of Ukrainian specialists

UK-led Operation Interflex enters new phase of training of Ukrainian specialists

The fifth year of the successful and high-value program will herald a new phase of professional training designed to build long-term capabilities.

The new training regime will include helicopter instructor training, of which the first trainees graduated last month, as well as other training such as medical and engineering.

A new phase of UK training support for Ukraine was announced today, extending to specialist areas including aviation, medicine, engineering and logistics.

Operation Interplex began after President Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The original mission was to provide basic infantry training at the right pace and scale so that Ukrainians with little or no prior military experience could defend their country against unprovoked Russian attacks.

Over the past four years, Interflex has developed into a highly successful and valuable training program that is internationally recognized. With the support of personnel from 13 partner nations, we provided basic infantry training along with leadership and instructor courses. It has also provided tailored mental resilience training to 375 Ukrainian combat psychologists starting in 2024.

Since its inception, 63,000 Ukrainians, including 11,000 military instructors, have completed Interflex training, giving a significant boost to Ukraine’s own training system.

As it enters its fifth year, Interflex will move to a new integrated framework, providing all UK-led training for Ukraine, both in the UK and abroad, under a single name. In response to the AFU’s changing needs, the program will move away from large-scale infantry training and towards specialized, advanced training designed to build long-term capabilities.

Secretary of Defense John Healey said:

Now, five years into President Putin’s brutal war, it is clear that Ukraine’s training needs have evolved beyond 2022. It is therefore right that the UK’s training offer evolves too.

As Operation Interflex enters its fourth year, we are entering a new phase that builds on our success and agility to deliver long-term professional skills such as pilot, medical and engineering training. By doing this, we are helping to better equip the Ukrainian Armed Forces so that they can meet future challenges independently and effectively.

As we watch the Middle East in recent months, President Putin wants us to divert our attention, but the Ukrainians continue to fight with great courage, and nothing will stop us from continuing to confront them for as long as necessary to secure peace.

Col. Andy Boardman, Interflex Operations Commander, said:

The opportunity to work with a large multinational coalition, dedicated Ukrainian linguists, and Department of Defense staff to accomplish such an important mission has been incredibly rewarding. The results have been remarkable, including deploying more than 63,000 trained soldiers into the Ukrainian Armed Forces and exposing our partners to the evolving nature of the modern battlefield.

Since 2022, Operation Interflex has repeatedly evolved to meet the changing needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and this is just the latest example of this agility as the UK maintains its commitment to support Ukraine for as long as possible.

Today’s announcement formalizes long-term defense and non-military cooperation, building on the 100-year partnership agreement signed between the UK and Ukraine.

The announcement follows the graduation of the first batch of trainees last month on courses currently running under the Interflex framework. A Ukrainian pilot has completed Britain’s first helicopter instructor training, with more trainees arriving soon as part of a long-term plan to help Ukraine build its own pilot training system. The UK continues to play a leading international role in supporting Ukraine. Together with France, the UK is co-leading a coalition of the willing to support Ukraine’s future security. On April 15, Secretary of Defense John Healey co-chaired the 34th Ukraine Defense Liaison Group meeting with Germany, working closely with NATO allies and non-NATO partners.

In total, the UK has pledged up to £21.8 billion in support to Ukraine, including £13 billion in military support (including a £2.26 billion ERA loan contribution), up to £5.3 billion in non-military support and up to £3.5 billion in export finance.
