Experts say that three strong earthquakes that occurred recently are unrelated Earthquakes

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck a rural area in Northern California on Wednesday. Hours later, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the northern coast of Japan, and two powerful earthquakes shook Venezuela in a devastating event that led to mass casualties.

The tremors occurred within eight hours, sparking online speculation about whether they were linked to each other.

Experts say they were not.

These episodes share a similarity in that they all occurred along known plate boundaries with high seismic hazards, according to William Barnhart, assistant coordinator of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Earthquake Hazards Program. But their timing on Wednesday was just a coincidence.

“Earthquakes happen every day all over the world,” Barnhart said. “Most of them happen far away from people.” “Yesterday was just a very strange day with two fairly large earthquakes in the areas that people felt.”

Barnhart said it is possible that a large earthquake could trigger tremors in other parts of the world.

But it’s unusual for such a cascading effect to occur thousands and thousands of miles away, according to Martin Hudson, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering at UCLA.

“If you look at earthquakes in the last 100 years, we’ve never had earthquakes this far apart,” he said.

In comparison, the initial magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Venezuela likely triggered a magnitude 7.5 quake due to their proximity.

“The fault might be ready to go, and then if there’s an earthquake nearby, it causes it to tip over the edge,” Hudson said.

In any given year, there are dozens of earthquakes greater than magnitude 7 around the world, Hudson said.

“It was a terrible incident for this to be in a populated area in Venezuela,” he added, referring to the ongoing disaster, in which at least 188 people have been confirmed dead.
