US-Iran deal provides access to Tehran nuclear sites, UN says

The interim peace deal between the United States and Iran gives inspectors from the UN nuclear watchdog access to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear sites, according to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

His comments came shortly after US President Donald Trump said Iran had agreed to allow nuclear inspections, although Iran insisted there were no plans for UN inspectors to visit sites damaged by US and Israeli strikes.

“There is a kind of war of declarations going on here,” IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said Friday at a news conference in Japan.

“What is undeniable is that we have a memorandum of understanding. This memorandum of understanding specifically states that the nuclear part of the memorandum will be supervised. That’s the word, will be supervised by the IAEA. To supervise, we have to inspect. There is no other way,” Grossi said.

“The technical work has started and we hope to be there soon,” he added.

The United States and Iran signed an interim peace deal last week to end the Middle East conflict, although Washington and Tehran continue to clash over some details of the 14-point memorandum of understanding.

Under the memorandum, the two sides agreed to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz free of charge for at least 60 days and end all hostilities, including in Lebanon, where fighting has persisted between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah.

Another United Nations agency, the International Maritime Organization, suspended efforts to evacuate ships and sailors stranded in the Middle East Gulf after a ship was attacked in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday.

Critics of Trump’s interim peace deal and the contents of the memorandum of understanding question whether this outcome was worth nearly four months of war. It also sparked comparisons to former US President Barack Obama’s nuclear deal with Tehran.

Trump abandoned the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, agreed to in 2015 during the Obama administration during his first term, calling it “embarrassing” for him as a US citizen.

Speaking to ABC News in an interview earlier this month, before the interim deal was announced, Obama said he “doubted” that any deal with Iran proposed by the Trump administration would be “significantly different” from the JCPOA.

Trump has since lashed out at critics of the memorandum of understanding, saying those who think he hasn’t been tough enough on Tehran are either “jealous, mean people or stupid people.”
