Rochester residents organize a donation campaign for victims of the Venezuelan earthquake

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) – Twin earthquakes in Venezuela have left more than 2,000 dead and nearly 38,000 missing, and area residents are stepping up sending relief.

A local fundraiser is collecting supplies for the victims, with drop boxes placed outside Seven Medicine’s front doors. Donors can bring items directly to the site at 2385 Scott Rd NW, Suite 200.

“Most people in Venezuela have lost everything,” said Yinai Coloza, one of the organizers. “We’re just trying to raise as much as we can so we can send that out and provide support.”

Colloza is teaming up with the Rochester-based Alliance of Chicanos, Hispanics and Latin Americans (ACHLA) to put together the campaign. Organizers require non-perishable foods, clothing, diapers, formula and medications.

Christina Jessica, owner of Seven Medicine, said her own experience shaped her involvement in the leadership.

“we [my family] “I came as refugees from Bosnia during our war in the early 1990s,” Jessica said. “Anytime there’s an opportunity where we can give back and help others, not just in our community, but in general, I try to help in any way I can.”

The campaign takes place on Independence Day for both the United States and Venezuela. Venezuela’s Independence Day is July 5.

“I’m doing this as an American, but I’m also doing this as a Venezuelan to celebrate our independence,” Coloza said. “So that would be great. I feel like it would have a more profound and meaningful way to show support.”

The trip will take about two weeks, ending around July 11.
