West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes in Collier County
South Florida County – Scientists in the mosquito control district of Korea County have discovered the West Nile virus in local mosquitoes.
The district is applying treatments for adult mosquitoes and larvae with permanent water.
Samples of positive West Nile virus mosquitoes were sent to Tampa at the Institute of Public Health. The district said verification should take place within two weeks.
“We closely monitor the virus levels of mosquito populations in the county, but we have no control over the birds arriving in this area carrying the West Nile virus,” said Patrick Rynn District Secretary. “The hurricane sari left abundant still water. This week we applied not only mosquito treatment, but also mosquito larva granules that are released for 30 days to kill mosquito larvae. We will continue our efforts to reduce the number of larvae. “
Mosquito eggs hatch in just 5-7 days. More mosquitoes are expected with the abundant water left behind by the hurricane sari.
