10 paramedics tested positive for COVID-19-6 recommended self-quarantine-“no contact with patient”
The service said those who tested positive were based in the South and “participated in non-work social events.”
Six more workers are also advised to self-isolate.
This was initially reported on Belfast Telegraph, stating that the event was believed to be a golf trip in the Republic of Ireland.
Regarding the BBC this morning, NIAS Chief Executive Michael Bloomfield said staff who tested positive were nearing the end of the 10-day isolation period.
He said: “This happened almost two weeks ago, and we should see the staff return to work soon. No one was seriously ill.”
Bloomfield had about 60 staff in the Craigavon emergency department and 15 on a golf trip, 12 of whom were ambulance staff. He emphasized that not all of them were “emergency staff.”
He added that they confirmed that the virus had spread “not through work, but by community transmission.”
“The staff were away together for days,” he said, “it went from one to the next,” and “shows how contagious it is.”
He emphasized that staff who tested positive had never come into contact with the patient.
“I would like to emphasize that there was no contact with the patient as a result of this,” he said. “No one was working within 48 hours of symptom. Since then, there has been no staff. One member worked short hours but had no contact with the patient. . “
