Two years after the tsunami, communities face the COVID-19 crisis – Indonesia
PALU / Jakarta / Kuala Lumpur, September 28, 2020 – Two years after an earthquake and tsunami struck communities in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, thousands of survivors face a severe social and economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The September 28 earthquake triggered a three-meter-high tsunami and caused soil liquefaction, leaving more than 4,100 people dead and about 110,000 homes damaged or destroyed. PMI volunteers from the affected areas were the first to respond, and staff and volunteers from all over Indonesia participated in the two-year relief and recovery efforts.
This massive operation involving the government and multiple agencies faced challenges as well. While many of the displaced have alternative accommodations, they often live with relatives due to the widespread destruction of residential areas, the sheer scale of the displaced, and most recently COVID-19.
Limited job opportunities in the region have been exacerbated by the damage to local industry due to social restrictions across Indonesia. The Regional Development Planning Agency reported that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was worse on the local economy than it was two years ago.
The Secretary General of the Indonesian Red Cross, Sudirman Saeed, explained:
“Over the past two years, the Indonesian Red Cross has been providing emergency and recovery programs to people in Sulawesi, adapting in the past six months to protect people from COVID-19 while expanding its scope to support those affected by disasters and who are facing even more hardships due to the epidemic.”
“Across the province, hundreds of cases of COVID-19 have been reported putting families at risk due to crowded living conditions and crowded homes. We are adapting to these new needs and challenges.”
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) support Indonesian Red Cross support to affected communities and included emergency health care for 17,600 people; Nearly 22 million liters of water have been distributed to over 70,000 people; Health promotion and psychological support activities helped keep 14,000 people safe and healthy. In the recovery phase, the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (PMI) are in full swing to provide cash assistance to more than 10,000 families (40,000 people) worth around 4 million Swiss francs in the form of direct cash transfers.
Jan Gelfand, Head of the Country Cluster Support Team for the International Federation of Indonesia and East Timor (IFIET), said:
“After the Aceh and Nias tsunami, this was the largest relief and recovery operation from the Indonesian Red Cross and local teams have achieved a tremendous amount in some of the most challenging circumstances to help communities recover from this triple disaster over the past two years.”

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
