Illinois reports the first human West Nile virus-related deaths in 2020
Springfield, Illinois (WREX) —The Illinois Public Health Service (IDPH) confirmed the first human West Nile virus-related death in Illinois in 2020.
According to IDPH, a Chicago resident who became ill in mid-September and tested positive for West Nile virus died.
“We’re already in the fall, but the West Nile virus is at risk until the first heavy frost,” said IDPH Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike. “It is important that everyone continues to take precautions, such as using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers, and staying indoors from dusk to dawn.”
Currently, 24 cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Illinois. Last year, IDPH reported 28 cases, including one death (although human cases are underreported).
In 2019, cases of West Nile virus-positive mosquito herds, birds, horses, and / or humans were reported in 46 counties in Illinois.
West Nile virus is transmitted by mosquito bites. Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache, and muscle aches. Symptoms can last from days to weeks. However, 4 out of 5 people infected with the West Nile virus show no symptoms. In rare cases, serious illnesses, including meningitis, encephalitis, and even death, can occur. People over the age of 50 and those with immunodeficiency are at increased risk of serious illness.
Precautionary measures include the practice of the three “Rs” (reduction, repulsion, and reporting).
- Reduction – Eliminate or renew all pooled water sources weekly. Repair or replace screens with crevices or other openings.
- REPEL-Outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts, and apply insect repellents including DEET, picaridin, lemon eucalyptus oil, or IR3535.
- Report – Reports areas where water has stagnated for more than a week, such as roadside ditches, flooded gardens, and similar areas that can cause mosquitoes. The local health department or city government may be able to add larvicide to the water. It kills mosquito larvae.
