Norwegian University of Science and Technology: Passion helps you stay active as you grow older
As research shows, maintaining a passion for work not only motivates us, but also keeps us in a positive state of mind.
As we get older, we tend to “let go”. We don’t want to go out and we don’t want to be motivated to pursue even our usual activities and passions.
However, according to a new study by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), it is important to keep burning the flames of passion to maintain good health and happiness.

This paper, published in New Ideas in Psychology, examined the relationship between passion, courage, and positive mental state in subjects aged 14 to 77 years.
“Our passion controls the direction of the arrow, what excites us, and what we want to achieve. Courage is our strength, how much we are willing to do for something. Decide if you want to work, “says Professor Hermundur Sigmundsson of the Department of Psychology at NTNU.
Passion is holy fire
To investigate these relationships between passion and positivity, researchers recruited 917 participants from different age groups. According to them, “these correlations are very similar between the ages of 14 and 53.
What is characteristic of young people, especially even boys, is the correlation between passion and courage. If they are enthusiastic about something, young people will spare no effort to achieve it.

This correlation is also found in other age groups. Those who are truly in love work hard to reach their goals and do their best when faced with difficulties.
Motivation declines with age
However, the authors found that this correlation diminished with age. Changes occur from the age of 50: the relationship between passion and courage is almost nonexistent. This means that at a certain age you may be well-meaning and enthusiastic about something, but you may lose your motivation when the time comes.
Does this mean that older people rarely stick to their wishes unless they find something that really interests them? Sigmundsson believes this is the right question. In his opinion, people over the age of 50 are very passionate, but they tend to be less courageous. Or vice versa.
“This means that it is more difficult to mobilize courage and will, even if you have passion, or you have courage and will, but not so enthusiastically.”

Positive thinking works in the same way. At the age of fifty, we may still be passionate, but we may have lost confidence in our ability to reach our goals. Or you can run a business, but you no longer have an inner passion for it.
Rekindle the flames of passion
So what can we do to avoid this? “We have to find meaningful activities and interests that we can pursue with courage and will. It’s important to light sparks, regardless of age,” said the 85-year-old, who is still training on ice. Professor Sigmundsson gives an example of an ice skating world champion. “The important thing is to stay in the activity of your choice,” he concludes.
