The former head of Met Diversity said stop and look for it as a “traumatic community”
Police have conducted the largest number of searches in seven years, and it has risen by more than 50% in 12 months, according to official statistics released today. (Subscribe:
Between April last year and March this year (before the blockade) there were more than half a million stops. And blacks had nine times more chances to stop and explore than whites. The numbers were even higher when blocked. In May alone, Met made nearly 43,000 stops, up from 21,000 a year earlier. In the blockade, the Met stopped nearly 22,000 young black men, the equivalent of more than a quarter of blacks aged 15-24 in the capital. In this report, we hear Victor Olisa’s personal perspective. He directed a stop and search in London, and was sent to the Home Office to help rewrite the rules. To discuss the use of police stop and search tactics, we were also joined by Metropolitan Police Commander Jane Connors, who oversees violence reduction, stopping and searches. We were also joined by Sayce Holmes-Lewis, a community activist who helped train Met police. ———————– Follow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/Channel4News .
