Rapid increase in outbreaks in hospitals and elderly homes
New figures show that the outbreak of Covid-19 in hospitals and elderly housings has skyrocketed during the Christmas and New Year periods due to the surge in community infections.
A total of 23 outbreaks were reported in the week leading up to January 2, an increase of 14 out of the previous week and an increase of 22 outbreaks in long-term care facilities.
This is the first week of the last six years when hospital outbreaks have reached double digits.
There are 76 cases in hospitals and 64 cases in elderly housing with care. There must be no new positive Covid-19 cases for 28 days for the outbreak to be declared closed.
Outbreaks or clusters are defined as Covid-19 cases identified in two or more laboratories. Overall, data from the Health Protection Surveillance Center (HPSC) show that 141 outbreaks have been recorded in hospitals and 135 outbreaks in elderly housing since the beginning of the second wave of the pandemic.
Incidence in private households continued to decline, with 40 cases recorded in the week leading up to January 2, a decrease of 61 cases from the previous week. Incidence in private households has declined in the last three weeks.

Despite school closures, there were 11 outbreaks related to school children or staff reported by the HPSC in the week leading up to January 2-down from 21 in the previous week. This was the lowest number in 7 weeks.
There were 15 confirmed cases associated with recent school outbreaks. Overall, there have been 1,234 cases associated with school outbreaks since August, eight of whom were hospitalized.
There were 7 restaurant-related outbreaks, up 3 from the previous week, and 3 pub-related outbreaks, up 2 from the previous week.
Overall, 154 new outbreaks were reported in the week leading up to January 2, a decrease of 59 from the previous week.
Domestic infections accounted for the majority of outbreaks reported since the onset of the second wave of the pandemic, reaching 6,179 out of a total of 8,496 reported outbreaks.
Of the 145 outbreaks reported since summer in nursing homes, community hospitals, or long-stay homes, 71 remain unresolved.
ICU
There were 101 cases of Covid-19 in the hospital during the week leading up to January 2, with a total of 1,717 cases, 35 of which occurred in the ICU.
135 people died in connection with the outbreaks in these hospitals.
There were cases of Covid-19 confirmed in 65 new laboratories in the reported outbreaks of nursing homes in the week leading up to January 2, bringing the total number of nursing home cases since summer to 2,126.
About 116 of these were hospitalized and 160 died in connection with these outbreaks.
Within the vulnerable population, there was one new outbreak notified in the traveler community and one new outbreak in the direct delivery center.
