Smoking Increases COVID-19 Risk: Study
London: A new study found that smokers develop COVID-19 symptoms and are more likely to eventually be hospitalized. This is inconsistent with previous studies that suggested that smoking reduces the risk of the virus.
Researchers at King’s College London (KCL) have analyzed data from more than 2 million people and more than doubled the chances of smokers being hospitalized for COVID-19, coughing, shortness of breath, and fever.
They also found that smoking increased the likelihood of multiple symptoms in patients, including coughing, fever, shortness of breath, loss of smell and appetite, malaise, diarrhea, and confusion, by 50%.
The new study contradicts previous studies that smokers are less likely to be infected with the virus and have milder symptoms.
These findings, including studies from Mexico and data from Greece, confused researchers and were inconsistent with traditional understanding of the adverse effects of smoking on respiratory illness.
Dr. Mario Falchi, Senior Researcher and Senior Lecturer at KCL, said: “Several reports suggest a protective effect of smoking against COVID-19 risk, but studies in this area can easily be affected by sampling, participation, and response bias.”
“Our results clearly show that smokers are at greater risk of suffering from a wide range of COVID-19 symptoms than nonsmokers.”
Despite the early signs that smokers are at low risk of infection, the World Health Organization has declared that smoking can make people more susceptible to COVID-19. The KCL survey is the first concrete data to support this claim.
Claire Steves, a senior researcher and consultant doctor at KCL, said the findings could help fight the latest wave of COVID-19.
“It’s important to do everything we can to reduce the effects (of the disease) and reduce hospitalization,” she added.
“According to our analysis, smoking increases the likelihood that a person will go to the hospital, so quitting smoking is one of the things we can do to reduce the health effects of our illness.”
