The Times publishes for the first time “Unshakeable”, a comprehensive guide to earthquake preparedness

On Sunday, June 13, the Los Angeles Times will release “Unshaken,” a 24-page guide to preparing for the next big earthquake in Southern California.

The manual will consist of several components, including: a tutorial on how to assemble an earthquake toolkit; An article from seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones on the number one thing to prepare your home for a serious disaster; Preliminary writings on modifying your home and putting your finances in order; A guide to the apocalyptic pantry; A tutorial on what to do during and immediately after shaking; And much more.

“The idea behind the guide is that we’re due to be on ‘The Big One’ and we want Californians to be well prepared,” said Matt Ballinger, Times deputy editor of companion press.

On Saturday, an online companion section will be launched with added items, including a printable checklist to prepare for earthquakes and an updated database of area buildings in need of updating.

Additionally, a six-week pop-up newsletter that will debut on June 11 will serve as a step-by-step guide to earthquake preparedness and resilience. In a welcome note and introduction, Times columnist Pat Morrison wrote, “This newsletter is about preparing you for a close-up in the seismic story of Southern California.”

The Times also teamed up with KPCC for a free virtual event on June 24, titled “Local Matters: How to Survive the Big One”. A panel discussion will be attended by Morrison and Jones, Times earthquake reporter Rong-Gong Lin II, KPC science reporter Jacob Margulis, and KPC host Austin Cross to discuss the dangers and realities of living in an earthquake country.

Subscribe to our six-week newsletter to follow the “Unshakeable” earthquake preparedness project. A limited amount of print guide will be available for purchase through the Shop LA Times.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
