IIT Madras-IBM to offer courses on quantum computing
CHENNAI : The Indian Institute of Technology in Madras today announced a collaboration with IBM on teaching and research in quantum computing.
This collaboration will allow professors, researchers and students at IIT Madras to access IBM’s quantum systems and tools on IBM Cloud to accelerate joint research in quantum computing.
Gargi Dasgupta, director of IBM Research India, said IBM is committed to supporting educators like IIT Madras, who are shaping the next generation of quantum innovators through various initiatives and programs.
Professor Anil Prabhakar from the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras said that quantum computing offers the possibility of solving computationally insoluble problems.
“We have played a leading role in the indigenous development of quantum key distribution (QKD), having demonstrated the phase reference QKD distributed at distances of up to 150 km,” he said.
“Such QKD protocols form the building blocks for quantum networks that will secure our communications, and also enable new paradigms like photonic quantum computing in addition to distributed and blind quantum computing.”
He will also develop programs to help prepare students for careers that will be influenced by this next era of computing through science and business.
Quantum computing lab courses will include hands-on lab sessions on IBM quantum systems and complement existing courses on quantum information and computing. IBM will provide the learning resources, tools and access to systems that faculty and students need.
