The People’s Choice Awards will air on NBC and E! – The Hollywood journalist
The People’s Choice Awards are expanding their television footprint.
The annual awards will air on NBC as well as E! in 2021, marking the show’s return to a broadcast network since 2017. The move will also give NBC a first step into awards season after dropping the 2022 Golden Globes amid criticism from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for its lack of diversity and other issues.
“The People’s Choice Awards have always been for fans, and this show has quickly become a staple for audiences around the world on E!” Said Frances Berwick, president of entertainment networks at NBCUniversal Television & Streaming. “With our new structure, we Now have the opportunity to extend this experience to NBC, bringing together the power of our portfolio to celebrate everyone’s favorite shows, artists and stars with our biggest broadcast yet.
E! landed the rights to the People’s Choice Awards in 2017 after airing for more than 30 years on CBS. While they performed well compared to other E! programming over the past three years, total audiences have been well below the show’s lowest ratings on CBS. Over the past three years, the awards have averaged around 1.54 million viewers for E !, compared to over 7 million viewers from 2015 to 2017 on the broadcast network.
The 2021 People’s Choice Awards are scheduled to air on December 7 with 44 categories spanning movies, TV, music and social media. Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski will produce the telecast.
