Pecan Street Festival canceled for 4th time, COVID-19 outbreak hits struggling artists hard
AUSTIN (KXAN) Following the cancellation of this fall’s Pecan Street Festival, local vendors are unhappy to miss another opportunity to showcase and sell their art.
The city of Austin denied the festival’s special event permit on Tuesday, four days after the deadline for vendors to pay their non-refundable booth fees for the festival.
This is the fourth time that the Pecan Street Festival has had to cancel its biannual event due to the pandemic.
The city said organizers of the Pecan Street Festival initially applied for a permit before the city changed its special event requirements August 30. The city says the change came after Austin moved to Stage 5 of Austin Public Health’s risk-based guidelines.
The city’s new criteria include a requirement that all in-person participants must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours before any event under the city’s jurisdiction.
The organizers of the Pecan Street Festival say they could not meet this requirement because the event is free and there are no barricades. People can come and go along Sixth Street.
Organizers tell KXAN that supplier contracts state that the booth fees they pay are non-refundable. However, the Pecan Street Association either reimburses 40% of vendor fees or allows them to transfer all of their stand fees in the spring, for a seat at this festival. The same was done when the spring festival was canceled earlier this year.
