Faye Webster hates attention. But his songs continue to gain momentum.
That attention has continued to grow since 2013, when Webster, then 16, self-released her debut album, Run and Tell, a folky whirlwind of slide guitar and twang. She grew up in Atlanta, where she still lives, listening to her mother play Alison Krauss records and bluegrass fiddle songs, an aesthetic she incorporated into her own music. But it also moved, solidly and smoothly, toward a happy medium between indie-rock and bass-heavy pedal steel country, simmering drums beneath tropical synths while focusing on the mundane brutalities of relationships.
On his new album, Underdressed at the Symphony, out on Friday, she traces the details of putting herself back together after a breakup: she congratulates herself on having eaten before noon, scrolls through her eBay search history, remembers to call her mother.
Webster is hesitant to call it a breakup record. I wish there was a better term for it, she said after sighing. The first song she wrote for the album, But not a kiss, began with a 10-second voice memo she brought to the studio. She slowly rolls out the line, I want to sleep in your arms, then, after a pause, she blurts out the words, But no kiss. She was looking for music that could express this feeling, what she calls an anti-romantic love song. Unable to find it, she wrote it down. I was able to create this really unbalanced, almost contradictory, meaningful thing,” she said.
The title comes from a ritual she began in the months following her split. She would decide to see the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, a 15-minute drive from home, moments before a performance started. It was therapeutic for me, she said. I was like, no one knows me, I don't know anyone here, they don't care about me. I'm incognito and I listen to music I know nothing about.
