Trial of man accused of murdering 'Hollywood Buck' continued until August

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond man's trial accused of illegally killing Richmond's beloved 'Hollywood Buck' continued until August.

According to Commonwealth's Attorney for Richmond Colette McEachin, the defense continued the case of Jason Walters, 36, until August 15, 2024.

Walters was arrested on Sunday, January 28 in connection with the illegal killing of several deer, including the celebrity Hollywood Buck. A Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources Conservation Police officer obtained a search and arrest warrant for Walters, citing a photo publication made on the Star City Whitetail Facebook account on December 14, 2023.

The photos show Walters with an “atypical 29-point dollar” – or a deer whose antlers have 29 points. At the time, Walters claimed in the body of the post that he killed the deer in Prince Edward County with a muzzleloader or a firearm that loads through the front of the barrel.

The Hollywood Buck is a deer that was often seen at Hollywood Cemetery in Oregon Hills, where its namesake originated. The deer's unusual size and unique antlers made it easy to spot, according to the Department of Wildlife Resources. It was these famous characteristics that brought Walter's message to the attention of authorities.

In an edited version of the post on the same day, December 14, 2023, Walters wrote that at the time of publication he “definitely didn't recognize the resemblance to Hollywood Buck.” He goes on to say that “it is in the right hands to investigate accordingly.”

After investigating Walters' hunting records, the department determined that Walters did not record either the killing of the famous deer or that of any other deer he allegedly hunted that day, as required by law .

A series of interviews revealed other concerns at the department, including that Walters was allegedly introduced without permission during his hunting trip.

Following the collection of further evidence from Walter's phone, including photographs and text messages, Walters was arrested and charged with a total of 19 offenses:

Two counts of trespassing to hunt, fish and/or trap
One count of trespassing after interdiction
Three counts of killing a deer; exceeding the baggage limit
A charge to make money
Three counts of illegal hunting of a wild animal
Two counts of hunting regulation: failure to declare
Three counts of hunting regulation: non-validation of the tag
One count for failure to validate tags and report
Three counts of dumping trash on highway/public property

Walter's final court appearance was Thursday, April 11 at 10 a.m.
