Matthew Perry's death investigated after ketamine was found in actor's blood

An investigation has been launched into the death of Friends actor Matthew Perry and how he received the powerful prescription drug ketamine, which has been ruled a contributing factor in his death.

Tuesday's disclosure of an ongoing criminal investigation by police and two federal agencies came five months after the Los Angeles County medical examiner concluded that Perry died of an unintentional drug overdose and drowning. No criminal act is suspected.

The December 15 autopsy report concluded that Perry died from the acute effects of ketamine, which, combined with other factors, caused the actor to lose consciousness and slip underwater in the bath hot tub from his home in Los Angeles.

Based on the medical examiners' findings, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United States Postal Inspection Service, continued its investigation into the circumstances of Mr. Perry's death, the LAPD said. in a report.

A police spokesperson said detectives from the LAPD's Robbery-Homicide Division are leading the police investigation.

Toxicology tests revealed the presence of ketamine, a short-acting anesthetic with hallucinogenic properties, in Perry's body at dangerously high levels, well within the range typically associated with general anesthesia used in surgical care monitored, according to the autopsy.

Coronary heart disease, the effects of the opioid addiction drug buprenorphine, also detected in his system, and drowning were listed as contributing factors in his Oct. 28 death.
