Janhvi Kapoor reveals why Dostana 2 was shelved and answers if it was because of Karan Johar and Kartik Aaryans fight: We shot for 30-35 days | Bollywood News
When Dostana 2 was abandoned, there was a lot of discussion in the film industry and many suggested that it was due to a glitch. Alleged tiff between actor Kartik Aaryan and producer Karan Johar. Janhvi Kapoor, who was to star in the film with Kartik, eventually revealed that the film was shelved and explained why Dharma Productions decided to suspend the film's shooting.
In a recent interview with The Lallantop, when Janhvi was asked why Dostana 2 was no longer being made, she replied, “I don't really know. We had even shot for this film for around 30-35 days. The filming went very well, in my opinion. Honestly, I don't know why the film was shelved. Of course, I tried to ask too, but I guess (it was because) we started filming this movie way before Covid. And then Covid happened and there was basically a year and a half delay. Then people thought relaunch the movie, I didn't know.
When prodded further and asked if she didn't want to mention the fight between Kartik and Karan Johar, she said, “I don't think that's it. I think the work is extremely important to both of them. But what happened between them and what didn't happen (what happened between the two of them), you should ask them about it.

After announcing Dostana 2 starring Kartik, Janhvi and debutant Laksh Lalwani, Karan Johar announced in 2021 that he was planning to recast the film. Reportedly, Kartik left the Dharma Productions film due to creative differences in the same year. The film was to be directed by filmmaker Collin DCunha. However, rumors were doing the rounds that Kartik's unprofessional behavior had irritated Karan and that's why he was no longer a part of the now shelved film.
Kartik had also addressed the issue. In an earlier interview with indianexpress.com, when asked about the status of Dostana 2, he had said, “I am only focusing on my work. That's all I would like to say about this. He added: What happens sometimes is that people do baat ka bangaad (Make a mountain of it). There is nothing more to it. No one has that much time (to think that much). Everyone just wants to work, do a good job. Other than that, it's just rumors.
Kartik and Karan seem to have ironed out all their differences as Karan has announced a film with Kartik in 2023. Directed by Sandeep Modi, the film is scheduled to release in August 2025.
