Forest of Lights planned to celebrate Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary

Trees and bushes have an undeniable appeal even in their natural state, but an upcoming art installation at Golden Gate Parks Peacock Meadow in December plans to render them in a sculptural landscape of electric illumination.

Entwined, designed to celebrate the parks’ 150th anniversary this year, is the creation of San Francisco artist Charles Gadeken. It will consist of three tall, sculpted trees, creating illuminated canopies as tall as 30 feet, surrounded by an array of flowering shrubs made up of 2,000 LED lights.

The installation, a collaboration between the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the San Francisco Parks Alliance, is scheduled to open on December 1 and end in late February, with a possible extension until June 1.

As the days get darker, this dazzling facility will allow park enthusiasts to experience Golden Gate Park in new and creative ways as we close its 150th anniversary, said San Francisco Park and Recreation General Manager , Phil Ginsburg, in a statement. A twilight walk in the parks to the east will be truly magical this winter.

The installation should include a range of lighting effects reminiscent of raindrops, lighting and thunderstorms, wind blowing through grass and ripples on a pond.

Funding for the facility came from private donations to the Park Alliances Golden Gate Park 150 campaign, organizers said, not from city coffers.
