The Tulsa Race Massacre destroyed Black Wall Street, one of the richest black communities in the country. Actor and philanthropist Hill Harper has said he plans to play a pivotal role in sparking economic growth in black communities.
Black Wall Street was very busy, Harper said. The white community was very lively. Then you had this horrible event perpetrated by racism, white racists, and it crushed the soul of the city.
Harper believes the ramifications of the massacre continue to impact black communities to this day. Black Americans currently hold less than 1% of the wealth of the Americas.
The vast majority of 35 million black Americans, institutional and systemic racism has created so many barriers to entry and income inequality that we have a huge wealth gap that is only growing, Harper said. It doesn’t get any better. It’s getting worse.
Harper is commemorating the community of Greenwood with a new app called Black Wall Street, which launched on Monday. The app is designed to stimulate the economic growth of black communities.
We want to provide access for everyone, but more importantly, it starts with financial literacy and financial education, Harper said.
Harper has said that the official launch of The Black Wall Street digital wallet will take place at sunset to coincide with the start of the Tulsa Race Massacre.
