Why make loungewear your style of choice

As times progressed, so did outfits. And this progress was reflected in clothes becoming increasingly less constricting, less difficult to get into and out of, and more informal. And while the trend nowadays is towards layering and taking into account the textures, colors and fabrics in order to layer correctly, the fact is people wear fewer clothes at a given time now than they used to a century or even 50 years ago. Find that hard to believe? Well, keep in mind that T-shirts were considered underwear for a large portion of their existence. And they, in turn, evolved from the union suit, a type of long underwear similar to a present-day onesie, which was very popular in the 19th and early 20th-century menswear.

The natural progression, of course, means activewear became a staple in many people’s wardrobes. Starting in the 2010s, the market continued to rise and saw continuous innovation in designs and fabrics, which was unseen merely back in the aughts. If that is not enough to convince you to invest in comfortable clothing, have a look at the following, and you may change your mind.

The comfort

Let’s face it; modern people are busy. Lives are hectic and occupied with all types of responsibilities and errands. It’s difficult enough keeping up sometimes; if your clothes are uncomfortable and hinder you, you’re less likely to accomplish your goals in due time. How you feel dictates how productive you will be, and it is difficult to stay on top of your game if you are constantly aware of discomfort. There are many variations of track pants out there that look quite formal, especially if you buy them in nude colors such as beige, light gray or brown. Jeans have also been upgraded for comfort, and you can now find soft, cashmere or merino-blend denim. This way, you can enjoy the timeless appeal of jeans without worrying about the stiffness of all-cotton pants.

Go back to basic

The shift in aesthetics has gradually been towards minimalism and prioritizing functionality and practicality instead of excessive patterns and complicated cuts. Going overboard when it comes to clothing is simply not trendy nowadays. The plain, basic T-shirt never goes out of style, so you can always wear it, as it is appropriate for most situations. In tailoring, this means clean, crisp designs, avoiding all unnecessary ornamentations and sticking to a neutral color palette based on white, black, gray, brown, beige and ecru. This ensures that all pieces go with one another and can be mixed and matched to your liking. A wardrobe that contains the staples functions as a timesaver as well.

Sustainability

Since it is so widespread among the public these days, athleisure will raise questions of sustainability. Mass production tends to create a large amount of waste, while overconsumption often means that a lot of clothing ends up tossed in the trash and from them, adding to the tons of other clothes that end up in landfills. But worry not; it is very easy to find loungewear that is flattering, pleasing and comfortable while also remaining conscious of its own impact. Increased quality is an important aspect of sustainability and one that you may easily find works to your advantage. Because clothes made out of good fabrics stand the test of time (and the test of style), are gentler on your skin and hold up well in spite of everyday mechanical damage. If you aim for complete comfort even during sleep, buy pajamas made in Canada, which come in a variety of materials and blends that are breathable, cute and classy and give you that comfort you seek no matter where you are.

Versatility

The world slowly emerging from the still-present shadow of the pandemic is something we are all aware of. You may be reluctant to keep on the path of home and active wear. It just reminds you too much of those days spent inside, with nothing to do, when the world looked very bleak. The feeling is similar to many others. But that doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your comfort. Activewear is very versatile, and all you need to remember are some small tips and tricks in order to elevate your outfit and not get stuck into a perpetual “I just rolled off the couch” look. In order to achieve this, look at your outfit as pieces of a whole and see what you can change. If your leggings have a bit of a flare, they could easily work with a pair of kitten or block heels. No need to wear a stiff shirt with a suit; a fitted t-shirt will work just as well. You can wear hoodies and sweatshirts with skirts (bonus points if the textures clash a little, such as in the case of a satin skirt), while a bomber can elevate any look and give it that sleek, mysterious flair.

Room for creativity

With a booming market showing no signs of stopping anytime soon, you can rest assured that athleisure will continue to develop and incorporate more and more designs. This means that there is plenty of room for you to experiment with your personal style and see what works for you. There are so many combinations you can muster that the possibilities truly seem endless. You can consider pairing up a very colorful knit with white or black leggings. Zip-up knit sweaters are very fashionable at the moment. Sweater vests are also enjoying their moment in the sun and come in all the color combinations you can think of. Who could have predicted this quintessential grandpa-style piece would soar to become a fashion favorite of the most fashion-forward people everywhere? Consider silk joggers or cargo pants and mix them with a turtleneck or mock neck sweater. Don’t shy away from accessorizing; jewelry, belts, scarves and hats work very well with loungewear, and beanies and bucket hats have become favorites among many.

Lastly, have fun. That is always the most important part of everything fashion. If it doesn’t make you feel good about and about yourself, it’ll just hamper your vibe. And that’s exactly what you want to avoid.
